Erected in 1830 at the request of the Duke of Wellington, these steps allowed the Duke to comfortable mount/dismount from a horse whilst attending the lavish Athenaeum Club.

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington was one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

The stones are still outside the Athenaeum Club, remaining relatively unnoticed for the past 170 years by passers by.
