St Mary Abchurch is a Church of England church off Cannon Street in the City of London. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is first mentioned in 1198–1199.
The church dates back to the twelfth century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The additional name “Abchurch” may be a variant of “Upchurch”, referring to its position on comparatively high ground.
The church contains stunning interiors with a painted dome ceiling. The dome is hidden by the churches exterior roof, making it a surprising discovery upon entering the church.
The medieval church was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, and replaced by the present building.
