Purfleet Royal Gunpowder Magazine was established in the 18th century for the storage of gunpowder on the east of London near Purfleet.

Five large magazine storage warehouses were constructed in 1759, but magazine number 5 is the only surviving of the original five and is now a scheduled monument.

The site also includes an 18th century proofing house and the original gatehouse clocktower to he complex, described by Historic England as “an integral part of the finest ensemble in any of the Ordnance Yards, consistent with the high standards practised by the Ordnance Board in its designs for fortifications and barracks from the C17”).
