The large concrete monolith barges on the Thames foreshore at Rainham marshes were concrete tank “lighters” left over from Word War II.

A total of five hundred concrete lighters were built by British forces as part of the naval fleet. Tank lighters were most commonly used for carrying water or fuel.

These lighters would have been used to support vessels for the D-Day landings of 1944.
